Frequently Asked Questions

Who is SmartMaker?
My name is Peter van der Gugten and I have been working with automation for decades. The rise of the smart home has led me to specialize in it. In the past 5 years, I have worked with OpenHAB and later with Home Assistant. I am fascinated by the rapid increase in the production of affordable smart devices. I strongly believe in the continued growth of smart devices and their integration into our daily lives. With SmartMaker, I aim to create a fun company that embraces this trend.
How can SmartMaker work remotely?

To transform your house into a smart home, it’s simple – just provide me with the necessary details, as explained in this article. Alternatively, I can remotely guide a resident with a camera through the house to gather the required information. For the installation, you will need equipment, including a small computer for more extensive systems, which can be conveniently purchased online. Once you have the equipment, I can configure it remotely. Typically, I initially connect to a computer within your home to check the settings, and if necessary, I can log into the system remotely to make any required adjustments. Rest assured, access to your smart home system is granted and can also be revoked at your discretion.

What are costs to build a Smart Home?

When it comes to building a Smart Home, the costs can vary depending on factors such as the number of smart devices you choose, the extent and quality of connections required, and whether you opt for a central (small) computer. Additionally, if you desire a remotely controllable system, this can also affect the overall cost. At SmartMaker, we understand the excitement and potential of smart devices, and we are here to help you create a seamlessly integrated and affordable smart home experience. Discover the possibilities today!

Is a Smart Home safe?
In a secure smart home, the smart devices are locally connected. Every device that is (only) connected via the cloud is a potential risk, not just for hackers or those with malicious intent, but also because these types of smart devices are tied to a supplier. If the supplier or service is no longer available, you may have to discard the device. It’s important to consider the risks associated with remote-controlled devices as well. For instance, a doorbell or lock is different from an air conditioner. A hacker could gain access, but what if the device malfunctions and you can’t enter your home? Thankfully, there are solutions for most situations, and safety and accessibility are always top priorities when installing smart devices.
