Cost Estimates (in euros):

Home Assistant Software: Home Assistant itself is open-source and free to use. SmartMaker installs the software on a small computer as listed below and takes care of the configuration. Please bear in mind that the computer is the heart of the system and a one off investment while if you buy smart devices that need a hub, the hub also costs money and is bound to the product. With Home Assistant you do not need hubs, only the smart device / sensor and that is where you save money. You can extend your system endlessly with new devices using the same computer.

The following are estimates:

  • Hardware: The cost of hardware can vary depending on your specific needs. Here are common components in euros:
    • Raspberry Pi or a NUC computer for running Home Assistant: €175 – €250
    • Motion Sensors: €17 – €42 each, depending on brand and features
    • Power Meters: €17 – €42 each, depending on brand and features
    • Smart Plugs or Switches (if needed): €17 – €42 each
    • Smart Lights (if needed): €8 – €42+ per bulb or fixture
    • Thermostats (if needed): €85 – €212+
    • Smart Locks (if needed): €85 – €255+
    • Cameras (if needed): €42 – €255+ per camera
    • Voice Assistant Devices (e.g., Amazon Echo, Google Home): €42 – €127 each but Home Assistant has built in voice assist.
  • Installation and Setup: That is where SmartMaker comes in. The hourly tariff is €75 but we prefer to give you a all in fixed price for building your smart home system.
  • Connectivity: You need a good working router with Wifi and coverage all over the house or building where smart wifi devices are installed. Please read this article where the importance of coverage is outlined. Wi-Fi or other networking equipment is crucial to ensure reliable communication between your smart devices.
  • Monthly Subscription Fees: Home Assistant software is free and once your smart home system is up and running, there are no extra costs but some smart home devices and services may require monthly subscription fees for enhanced features or cloud storage. SmartMaker recommends the use of Nabu Casa services to disclose your smart home system for use anywhere in the world. There are other free of cost options to make your smart home system available outside your Wifi network but that needs some tweaking.
  • Integration: Home Assistant can integrate with a wide range of devices and protocols, but some may require additional hardware or adapters to work seamlessly, adding to the cost.
  • Maintenance and Upgrades: Over time, you may need to replace batteries in sensors, update firmware, or add new devices, incurring additional costs.
